Ecco la vera differenza tra if e whether<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Partiamo da cosa sono: if e whether sono congiunzioni subordinanti, ovvero sono elementi che collegano tra loro gruppi di parole (dette clauses<\/em>). Sia if che whether sono utilizzati per introdurre una conditional clause<\/em><\/strong>, ovvero una frase (subordinata) condizionale. Equivalgono in sostanza al nostro \u201cse\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • I don\u2019t know whether <\/strong>I should tell him or not.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Ma \u00e8 qui che inizia la sfida. In effetti, la differenza tra if e whether in termini di significato \u00e8 piuttosto sottile. Cerchiamo di capirla con questi esempi, partendo proprio da if.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If introduce una frase subordinata condizionale<\/strong>, ovvero una frase che esprime una relazione tra causa ed effetto possibile o ipotetica, fa una previsione o specula su ci\u00f2 che potrebbe accadere.<\/strong> Di fatto, un ventaglio di possibilit\u00e0 piuttosto ampio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ecco quindi che capire la differenza tra if e whether <\/em>inizia a essere pi\u00f9 semplice: whether infatti \u00e8 ugualmente una congiunzione subordinante ma \u00e8 utilizzata per introdurre una frase interrogativa indiretta<\/strong> (ovvero una domanda \u201cvestita\u201d da frase, come ad esempio \u201cvorrei sapere se accettate prenotazioni\u201d), in cui cio\u00e8 la scelta \u00e8 tra due opzioni alternative.\u00a0Osserva bene questi esempi:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • I’m unsure whether <\/strong>my answer is correct. [Is my answer correct? Yes or no?]<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • He called the restaurant to see whether <\/strong>they take reservations. [Do they take reservations? Yes or no?]<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • She wondered whether <\/strong>his story was true. [Was his story true? Yes or no?]<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • They doubt whether <\/strong>the team will win. [Will the team win? Yes or no?]<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • I don’t know whether <\/strong>the mail has arrived. [Did the mail arrive? Yes or no?]<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        In tutti questi casi, ci sono due opzioni tra loro alternative. Ma la domanda pu\u00f2 sorgere spontanea: si potrebbe usare if in tutti questi casi? In effetti, s\u00ec. La verit\u00e0 \u00e8 che, sebbene if copra semanticamente il significato di whether (e non solo), whether \u00e8 considerato grammaticalmente pi\u00f9 elegante e appropriato.
